Wakefield, MA – The 12th Annual Warrior Club Golf Tournament was held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at the Beverly Golf & Tennis Club in Beverly, Massachusetts.  This year set a record for the most Golfers ever with 125 and for six (6) hours, on a fantastic August Summer day, if you listened, you could hear tales of glory days gone by from old teammates; bragging about who’s son or daughter was doing better, and a periodic “Roar” from across the course from someone who had just made their shot of the day!  In supporting the 2016 Wakefield High School Football Program, the phrase heard most often was: “This sure beats my best day in the Office!’..   The weather could not have been better and the conditions lead to success on and off the course.

The day began with our golfers being met as they drove into the golf club by the Seniors of this year’s Varsity Football Team.  Lead by Captains: Paul Iannuzzi, Joe Connell, Alex McKenna and Joe Marinaccio, the players greeted the golfers with a smile, welcomed them to the event, thanked them for their support and transported their clubs to their golf carts.  From there, golfers checked in at registration where a team of AMAZING Volunteers checked them in, assisted them with Raffle and Mulligan tickets and provided them with their gift bags – stuffed with Tournament giveaways.  The gift bags were donated by Wakefield Co-Operative Bank and inside, the golfers were provided with: Tournament Golf Shirts with the Warrior Insignia from The Savings Bank; Warrior Club insignia Baseball Caps from Keith’s Tree Service; Golf Towels from Caryn’s Sports Bar; a sleeve of golf balls, and assorted discount coupons from Golf Galaxy, Seasons 52 Restaurant, Laurie’s 9:09, Caryn’s Sports Bar, and The Dockside Restaurant.  From there, golfers enjoyed a Buffet Lunch of hot dogs and sausages, onions, and peppers, and chips, sponsored by Laurie’s 9:09 Restaurant.

The tournament began with a shotgun start at 1:30pm.  As the golfers raced to their starting hole, they were greeted by numerous contest and Tee Sponsor Signs to be seen all throughout the course. Tee Sponsors included: North Atlantic Consultants, HDPT Physical Therapy, Tarpey Insurance, Arbor Tree Service, Fahey Tires, Middlesex Gases & Technology, Alano’s, Independent Concrete Pumping, Sonny Noto’s, Oye’s Asian Fusion, Chris Barrett Realtors, Honey Dew Donuts, SPASHCO/NFP, Fred and Mary Marshall, Roberto Brothers Landscaping, Delphi Restaurants (Brothers), Caporale’s Fine Wine and Spirits, NorthShore Pool and Spa, and Intelligence Security International (ISI).  The 8th hole was the site of our newly named: John B. Shevlin, JR. –  Longest Drive Contest; the 12th hole hosted our Hole-in-One contest, sponsored by Matt Shevlin, and the 15th hole served as the location of our 50/50 Raffle. In addition, each golfer also participated in the Justin Leo Marshall Memorial Putting Contest, sponsored by Metalcrafter’s Inc.

It was déjà vu all over again, as this year’s winning team was also the 2015 Champions!  For the second year in a row, Bob Sardella, David Cullen and George Hurley, along with newcomer, Allison Petrosevich won with a 12 under Par, 58!  In addition to bragging rights and the Title of 2016 Warrior Club Golf Champions, each received a $100 gift certificate to Sabatino’s Restaurant in Wakefield.  Coming in Second Place with a 10 under Par 60 was the foursome of: Kevin McCaul, Matt Warren, Chris Grace and Jack Ryan.  For their efforts, they received $75.00 gift certificates to Laurie’s 9:09 Restaurant in Wakefield.

Other contest winners included: Closest-to-the-Pin – Gary Curran who stuck it 5’ 7’’ from the pin.; Longest Drive for Men – Tom Kelleher and Longest Drive for Women – Karen McMaster. Finally, the 50/50 winner was Joe DeFazio who won a cool $320.00.

At the conclusion of the tournament, all golfers were off to the Banquet, sponsored by Wakefield Co-operative Bank, to check the results of the Raffle drawings, participate in the Silent Auction, and enjoy a beverage and the buffet with their Warrior Club friends and family.  During the banquet, Tournament Chairman, Jim Joly shared that due to circumstances, there was never an opportunity to recognize and thank Marty Kane, who had been a member of the Warrior Club for years, and last year served as its Treasurer before “Graduating” with his youngest son, Zach.  “Marty represents the legacy associated with being part of the Warrior Club.  He and his wife Michelle, who served as a volunteer this year have no sons in the program and yet, here they still are, participating, supporting and contributing back to the program.”   I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Paul Buckley, who served as President last year and Co-President the previous year along with Penny Steele-Perkins for their service to the Warrior Club.

Joly went on to thank all the participants. He said, “I would like to personally thank all of you for taking the time and for giving as generously as you do.  Without your continued support and the backing of so many businesses, the Warrior Club could not provide the bridge between the resources of the High School and the experience we all want our student/athletes to have.” He continued, “This tournament is like a Family Reunion – a Warrior Club Family Reunion and the combination of current families with decades of alumni are what make it a tremendous success.  Thank you to all and let’s get excited for next years event!”

The Wakefield Warrior Club is a 501 C (3) organization supporting the Wakefield Memorial High School Football Program.  We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30pm, in the Community Room located within the Public Safety Building.  All Football Parents are welcomed to come and participate in our next meeting on September 7th.
