WAKEFIELD, MA–On Monday, August 6, 2012 the 8th Annual Warrior Club Golf Tournament, sponsored by Honey Dew Donuts, was held at Mount Hood Golf Course in Melrose, Massachusetts. This year’s weather was picture perfect, and 114 golfers came out to the Mt. Hood links in support of the WHS football program. After the birdies and bogeys were counted, the event raised nearly $13,000 for the program.
After everyone had their morning fix of coffee, muffins and donuts they checked in with the event committee to receive their gift bags and have their group picture taken by Richard Karlen Photography. This year’s gift bag was sponsored by the Wakefield Co-Operative Bank and it included: Visor sponsored by The Savings Bank; Golf-Towel sponsored by Teamwork Cleaning Concepts; Sleeve of Nike Golf Balls sponsored by Nike and Chet Davis-’76; Micro-fleece Zippered Pull-over sponsored by the Warkefield Warrior Club; and a few snacks to keep everyone’s energy level up throughout the day.
The tournament began with a shotgun start at 10am. As the golfers raced to their starting hole, the numerous contest, tee and cart sponsor signs could be seen throughout the course. The par 3′s included hole in one contests and a closest to the pin, while hole #14 included longest drive.Throughout the event, as golfers made the turn at the ninth hole they were treated to a hot dog and cold beverage provided by Mount Hood staff. Many golfers also stopped by the Justin Leo Marshall Memorial Putting Contest, sponsored by Metalcrafter’s Inc. and Marty Tucker-’90. This year’s contest had three finalists in Bob Iosua, Kevin Mnsor signs could be seen throughout the course. The par 3’s included hole in one contests and a closest to the pin while hole #14 included longest drive. Thanks to businesses and individuals such as Raycon Construction, MetalCrafters, Inc., Cara Donna Provisions, and The Wine Shop-Anthony Encarnacao-’89, for sponsoring our contests. The golf wrapped up around 3pm and everyone headed over to the Saugus Elks for what has come to be known as the “best deal in town.” Golfers were treated to a BBQ sponsored by The Daily Scoop and John Amentola. The meal was cooked by Chefs Scott Millea, Joe Conway, and Marina Smith. Scott’s and Joe’s sons played in the program, while Marina’s son is a current player, and all three parents donate their time each year to help the program and give back. This year’s menu included hamburgers, hotdogs, sausages, chili, clam chowder, and the main course of lobster and steak! Oh, by the way, that does not include side dishes including green and potato salads, corn on the cob and watermelon.
Once again, while the food was on the grille, Paul “Murphy” D’Angelo provided comic relief to the crowd of nearly 150.
After the meal (there was not a crumb left), the awards were given out for all the contest winners and this year’s tournament winners. It should be noted that Cliff Perry was the 50/50 raffle winner. The 2012 Champions were Coach Matt Chase-’89, Mike Foley from Wakefield, and Jason Stockard from Peabody. Just as they did last year, the the team recorded a 13 under par.
Tournament chairmen John Roberto-’98 closed out the event by thanking all the participants. He said, “I would like to personally thank all the business support and community support we receive this year.” He continued, “this tournament is as successful as it is because of the alumni. Each year you all come back to give back and for that we are grateful.”
John also thanked perennial committee member, Steve Sacco, and newcomers Betsy Benoit, Deb Levine, Linda Salamone and Penny Steele-Perkins for taking on the organizing and fund raising tasks for this important event.
