Wakefield, MA– Head football coach, Mike Boyages-’76, has announced that Steve Cummings will be the defensive coordinator for the upcoming season. Cummings, a Marshfield native, recently served as head freshman coach for the past four seasons.
Cummings led the freshman team to a perfect 9-0 record this past fall, capturing the Middlesex League Championship for the young Warriors. He has served as the head freshman coach since 2008.
Prior to coming to Wakefield, Steve experienced coaching at both the high school and college ranks. After a four year career at Framingham State College from 1996-2001 where he was a four year letter winner and captain, Cummings was a graduate assistant with the team during 2001. He was responsible for coaching the offensive line. During the 2003 season, Cummings was hired at Canton High School where he coached the receivers and linebackers. After leaving Canton, Steve became the receivers and linebackers coach at Sharon High School.
Steve is about to start his fourth season with the Warriors. He is currently a math teacher in the school system and has taught in the Brockton and Salem school systems as well.
On his recent hire Cummings said, “I am excited that Coach Boyages has the confidence in me to take the reigns of the defense. I think I can bring a whole new set of ideas to compliment what the current staff already has in place. I have big shoes to fill and look forward to the first practice.”
Coach Boyages and the Warriors have seen little turnover since he took control of the program in 1997. Boyages said, “we have been lucky to maintain the core of the coaching staff throughout the years. We had to replace long time offensive coordinator Paul Uva (currently at St. John’s Prep) a few years back, but the rest of my staff has been with me for a majority of my tenure here. We will certainly miss Al Lisitano and his 20 years of dedicated service, but I look forward to Steve Cummings adding a new dimension to the staff.”
The Warrior Club congratulates Steve Cummings and wishes him the best of luck.
