West Lafayette, IN–Purdue head football coach Danny Hope announced the hiring of Paul Gonnella as the director of player personnel. Gonnella joins the Boilermakers from the University of Memphis, where he spent the previous year as the director of player personnel for the Tigers. He has also spent time at Miami, Tennessee and North Carolina, in similar roles and capacities.
“We’re very excited to have Paul join our staff,” Hope said. “He is a game-changer in the recruiting process and will have an immediate impact on our program. He has the background and expertise in recognizing top-level talent and he will put Purdue on the early list of some of the top prospects from around the country.”
Gonnella will be responsible for managing the overall recruiting process for the Boilermaker program, organizing all prospect videos, ensuring that the coaching staff’s plan stays on track and the identification of a futuristic recruiting plan. He will be charged with organizing all official and unofficial visits to Purdue, supervising and monitoring assistant coaches efforts and provide direction and consistency throughout the process for the staff.
In an effort to help incoming student-athletes get acclimated to Purdue, Gonnella will additionally serve as the football program’s liaison to on-campus organizations, clubs, programs and opportunities.
Under the direction of Gonnella, Memphis’ 2011 recruiting class was the highest-ranked group in school history, and he played a part in signing top 10 classes with the Hurricanes, Volunteers and Tar Heels.
He also has coaching experience, serving as the head coach at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Mass., defensive graduate assistant and quality control at Mississippi State and on the staffs at Lovejoy (Ga.) and Somerville (Mass.) High Schools.
