More on the the menu than just turkey for Thanksgiving Game

With another Wakefield Warrior season winding down, the Warriors are left with one game remaining and a lot at stake.  The Warriors will take on their traditional Thanksgiving rival Melrose 10:15 AM at Landrigan Field on Thanksgiving morning.  Unlike the past several years, this year’s tilt will have some real implications for both Melrose and Wakefield.

For Melrose, this year has been a bit of a let down after back to back state title appearances.  The Red Raiders have had a very good seasons this year, but like Wakefield, they were eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs.  Despite that, Melrose sits only 1 game back of Wakefield for the Middlesex Freedom Conference Championship.  Melrose is 3-1 in the conference while Wakefield sits at a perfect 4-0. Melrose boasts one of the top running backs in all of Massachusetts, Mike Pedrini.  Pedrini will definitely test the Wakefield Warrior defense.  A win for Melrose would give them a 3 way share of the Conference Title with Wakefield and Watertown.

Coming off a tough 3-8 season last year, the Warriors find themselves one win away from a winning season and the outright undefeated Conference Championship. The Warriors will get a boost on Thanksgiving with the return of Senior Captains Alex McKenna and Joe Connell who have missed time over the last two weeks due to injuries.  Those two, combined with standout linebackers PJ Iannuzzi  and Carmine Sorrentino and the rest of the Wakefield defense, have the ability, if they play their best football, to contain Melrose. On offense, Sophomore Mike Lucey, who was pressed into duty with the preseason injury of Senior Koby Nadeau, has performed well throughout the year and continues to progress as a Quarterback.  Senior Joe Marinaccio has been the big play maker out of the back field all year and has shown his ability to take it the distance when given space. The offense needs to find a way to control the ball, keep Pedrini on the sideline and score points when they have the chance.  This will be the last game for the Senior class of Carmen Sorrentino, Will Shea, Alex McKenna, Joe Marinaccio, Pat Leary, John Stanfield, PJ Iannuzzi, Mike Powers, Scott Cooley, Tom Hayes and Joe Connell.  To end the season 6-5 and win a Conference Champions would cap of a nice run for this Senior class and give them a Thanksgiving to remember.
