Wakefield, MA–The Warrior Club is sad to announce that Peter Gonnella-’81 has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Peter’s family and friends are organizing a fundraiser at the Wakefield Elks (Bay State Road) on Saturday, July, 2, 2011 from 6PM to 11PM. Please not the venue change from the original gathering which was to be held the Crystal Community Club.
A fundraising page has been set up under the DONATE tab of the Warrior Club website where all major credit cards are accepted. For those who wish to send a check, checks should be made out to Peter Gonnella and mailed to Wakefield Warrior Club, P.O. 442, Wakefield, MA 01880. All donations are appreciated and greatly needed to help the family through this difficult time.
The Gonnella Family was the patriach of Wakefield Athletics in the 1980’s. Paul Gonnella-’88 was a standout football and basketball player. He is a member of the Wakefield High School of Fame and currently is on the staff with the Purdue University Football Team. Peter was an all everything basketball player and served as the team captain his senior year in 1980-1981. He was a Boston Globe All-Scholastic and named Team MVP. Peter’s other brothers, Mark and John were both involved in sports. All four brothers graduated from Wakefield High School, while their parents, Barabara and Tony, were heavily involved in athletics for 25 years.
After graduating Wakefield High School, Peter attended North Country Community College where he played for current University of Southern California head coach Kevin O’Neil. He caputred the Most Valuable Player Award by leading the team in assists and scoring.
After his stint at NCCC, Gonnella went on to start at North West Mississippi Junior College. It is here where Peter got the opportunity to play basketball at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Unfortunately for Gonnella, he blew out his knew the summer before camp started and it ended his playing career.
Gonnella is a physical education teacher and has taught at Northeast Vocational, Yarmouth High School, Harwich High School and currently at Everett High School. He has also coached basketball and most notably took Northeast to 3 consecutive MIAA tournament appearances.
Pete, 47, is married to Kerry (Almeida) Gonnella who graduated from Wakefield High School in 1989. Together they have 4 beautiful children: Angela-19 (Sophomore at Ole Miss), Cameron-13, Francesca-10, and Joey-8.
