Wakefield, MA- The Warriors once again delivered a crushing upset on their home turf. Wakefield defeated Belmont: Wakefield 39, Belmont 7.
Belmont started the game on offense but could not break through an impenetrable Warrior defense. A determined defensive line and several key defensive plays by Wakefield, including a stop in the backfield by Junior Mark O’Brien, kept Belmont at bay. When Wakefield’s offense was put on the field they sent an early message that they were ready to play. After receiving a punt, Junior Dan Cardillo ran 67 yards for a Wakefield touchdown. The Warriors were able to score again in the first quarter on the heels of a 19 yard run made by Senior Josh Puccio. As Wakefield’s defense continued to shut down Belmont, The Warrior’s offense was given plenty of opportunity to score. The next round of Warrior offense saw Senior James Bourque pass to Senior Matt McKenna for an 81 yard touchdown play. The first quarter ended with a score of: Wakefield 19, Belmont 0. In the second quarter Belmont still had not found a way past Wakefield’s defense. Wakefield’s offense scored in the second quarter with a pass from Senior James Bourque to Senior Josh Puccio for 45 yard touchdown. The Warriors soon scored yet again with a pass from Senior James Bourque to Junior Dan Cardillo for 64 yard touchdown. To end the quarter, Junior Luke Ingersoll stopped Belmont’s offense in the backfield. The score heading into the half-time break was: Wakefield 32, Belmont 0.
The third quarter moved slowly offensively due to great defensive action from both teams. Belmont made a push for the end zone off of a 17 yard run, but could not capitalize. Wakefield’s offense was kept out of the end zone due to a few penalties against the Warriors. In the fourth quarter Wakefield scored early with a touchdown run by Junior Sam Benoit. Belmont answered with a touchdown drive marking their first points of the game. With forty seconds left on Belmont’s next offensive turn, they chose to knee the ball and end the game with a score of: Wakefield 39, Belmont 7.
