Wakefield, MA- The Warriors were able to pull out yet another victory Friday night against Burlington’s Red Devils. This was one of the closest and toughest games Wakefield has played in recent weeks. After beating the Red Devils with a score of Wakefield 14, Burlington 6: The Warriors furthered their winning streak to five straight.
The quarter showcased just how evenly matched these teams were. The Red Devils’ brought a strong running game early on, which led them to the end zone. Wakefield’s offensive drive looked strong, with a successful play made by: Senior Josh Puccio, Sophomore Michael Miller, and Senior Matt McKenna, but was unable to make the final push to score. Come the second quarter, Wakefield’s defense came out to shut Burlington down. Junior Tyler MacDonald batted down a pass from Burlington’s quarterback, forcing the Red Devils to punt on fourth down. The Warriors’ answered with a strong offensive drive, but were denied a touchdown when Senior James Bourque’s pass was intercepted by Burlington. Heading into the half, the score was Wakefield o, Burlington 6.
The first offensive drive of the second half was a success for The Warriors. Senior Josh Puccio ran for 19 yards, and soon after Junior Alec Brown was able to reel in a pass for an 18 yard gain. Senior Josh Puccio then finished off the drive with a touchdown run for Wakefield. Sophomore Brian Auld then put The Warriors in the lead with a successful extra point attempt. When The Red Devils returned to offense, their drive was cut short by an interception made by Junior Tyler MacDonald. Penalties hurt Burlington in the fourth quarter, leading to an offensive opportunity for The Warriors. The opportunity was seized when Senior James Bourque, despite being pressured by Burlington’s defense, was able to throw an off balance pass 20 yards to Senior Matt McKenna for a touchdown. Burlington’s offense played the last few minutes of the game strong, hoping to tie the game. Junior Dan Cardillo stopped any chance of Burlington reaching the end zone when he recovered a fumble with less than 2 minutes in the game.
