Melrose, MA — The final win proved to be the toughest of them all.
The Wakefield High freshman capped off a perfect 9-0 season with a high-scoring 40-28 win over Melrose at Fred Green Memorial Field. The victory clinched the Middlesex League Championship for the young Warriors.
The offense was led by Brandon Panerese with three touchdown runs.
Zach Levine had one touchdown run and five two-point conversion runs and Nick Maio connected with Tyler Ledin on a long touchdown pass.
The Warriors were down 22-16 at half-time after Melrose threw a TD pass on the last play of the first half. It was the biggest deficit that they faced all year. Wakefield responded by rattling off the next 24 points to take a 40-22 lead. Melrose scored on the last play of the game to make the final, 40-28.
On a side note, the entire freshman team was asked to join the varsity program for the Thanksgiving Day game against Melrose on Thursday, Nov. 25 at 10:15 a.m.
