Wakefield, MA- In what was the closest game all season for the Warriors; Wakefield topped Marblehead 7-6. This Division 2A Playoff game was a battle to the very end, but with the Warriors just getting the better of the Magicians, they are now looking ahead to Saturday’s Super Bowl game.
Marblehead took an early lead over Wakefield by traveling just over 70 yards on five plays. The touchdown run was earned by Will Quigley, who ran 4 yards into the end zone. The Magicians missed the extra point attempt leaving them with just a six point lead over Wakefield. The Warriors first offensive drive ended early after a fumble was recovered by Marblehead’s Kyle McCormack. Junior Alec Brown helped return the ball to Wakefield by stopping a Magician play in the backfield. Soon after, Junior Nick Salamone made a sack on 4th and 7 to end the quarter. The second quarter was a battle of the defenses. Senior James Bourque threw two interceptions, but the Warriors played a tremendous defense to keep Marblehead from the end zone. Junior Mark O’Brien made it to the quarterback for a sack late in the quarter, leaving the Magicians to attempt a field goal. The kick was far left and heading into the half, the game was still Wakefield 0, Marblehead 6.
The Magicians were riddled by penalties in the third quarter, but both defenses played an outstanding quarter. Both teams forced multiple turnovers after fourth down. Junior Dan Cardillo started the fourth quarter off by intercepting the ball. On third down with 10 to go, Senior James Bourque completed a pass to Senior Matt McKenna for a first down. Senior Josh Puccio then moved the chains again by running for a first. The duo of Senior James Bourque and Senior Matt McKenna pulled through once again by completing a pass for 34 yards. With the ball spotted at the one yard line, Senior Josh Puccio ran for a touchdown to tie the game. Sophomore Brian Auld’s kick then put the Warriors ahead at 7-6. With just over a minute left, Wakefield’s defense finished off strong and secured the Warriors’ victory.
