Wakefield, MA–The Wakefield High School football team has been a bunch of “road warriors” this season as 3 of their first 4 games were on the road. Friday Night was homecoming in Wakefield and it proved to be a fun one as Wakefield beat Arlington by the score of 29-0.
Arlington took the opening kickoff and Wakefield quickly forced a 3 and out. Bruce Brown had an electric punt return down the Warrior sideline and brought the ball deep into Spy Ponder territory. The next play, QB Mike Miller found WR Connor Coogan on a 27 yard touchdown pass to put the Warriors up early with 8:32 left in the 1st qtr. Brian Auld’s extra point missed and the Warriors found themselves up 6-0.
Wakefield’s kick off coverage forced an Arlington fumble on the ensuing return and Jr. Mike McKenna pounced on the football at the Arlington 24 yard line. Back to back drops, one in the end zone, forced a 4th down and to Arlington’s credit, they were able to hold Wakefield on downs and took over on their own 19 yard line.
Arlington had some success throwing the ball and running against Wakefield. They drove all the way down to the Wakefield 25 yard line where the faced a 4th down. The Warrior defense stepped up and stuffed the play at the line of scrimmage to give the ball back to the offense with 0:52 left in the 1st qtr.
The first half of the 2nd qtr. was back and forth with both teams struggling offensively. Wakefield had some success midway through the second and moved the ball all the way down to the Spy Ponder 23 yard line. Miller, once again, found Coogan on the post route for the score and the Warriors led 12-0. Warrior coach Mike Boyages decided to go for the two point conversion but the pass was incomplete and the score stood at 12-0 with 4:08 left in the half.
Wakefield decided to go for a quick kick and recovered. They moved the ball all the way to the Arlington 9 yard line on nice runs by captain Tyler MacDonald, Jr. Derek Dussault and Miller. Again to Arlington’s credit, they forced a 4th down from the 4 yard line and they stuffed the Wakefield offense with 0:41 left in the first half. Arlington decided to take a knee and both teams entered the locker room with the score being 12-0 in favor of the home team.
Wakefield took the opening kick off 86 yards to the house to start the second half and Auld’s extra point made it 19-0. However much of the 3rd qtr. was back and forth, similar to the 2nd qtr.
Wakefield got a late qtr. drive going and Auld connected on an 18 yard field goal with 0:10 left in the 3rd. This made the score 22-0 in favor of the Warriors and at this point Wakefield seemed to be in control as the next series they forced Arlington to quick turnover on downs.
Bruce Brown had another stellar punt return down to inside the 10 yard line for the Warriors. Arlington’s defense, again stepped up, and forced the Warriors to a field goal attempt, which they blocked. Wakefield’s defense held tight though and the Warriors’ QB Josh Orlowitz quickly added a 25 yard TD run to make it 28-0. Sal LoBrutto kicked the extra point to make the score 29-0.
The win improves Wakefield’s record to 5-0, while Arlington drops to 1-4. The Warriors will host Middlesex League Small foe Wilmington on Friday Night to begin league play.
